The close relationship between Turkiye and Malaysia is now reflected not only in diplomatic ties but also in the form of strategic technological cooperation. At the forefront of this collaboration is ASELSAN, Turkiye’s premier defense electronics company, which is strengthening its presence in Southeast Asia through active engagement in Malaysia.

During an interview at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA), ASELSAN CEO Ahmet Akyol emphasized that Malaysia is a key strategic partner in the company’s long-term plans. He stated that the cooperation between the two countries exists not only at the governmental level but is further solidified through joint efforts in defense and technology industries.

ASELSAN has established a branch office in Kuala Lumpur, which serves as a central hub to support end users in Malaysia and the surrounding region. With this physical presence, the company not only delivers products and services directly but also contributes to local capacity development in both technical and operational aspects.

Deepening Industrial Cooperation

During LIMA, ASELSAN signed four strategic cooperation agreements with Malaysian local partners. According to Akyol, this step reflects the company’s commitment to not only market products but also to build long-term capabilities together with the local defense industry.

The forms of cooperation currently being explored include local production, co-design, and defense system integration at the operational level. These efforts cover various areas, including communication systems, optics, radar, underwater systems, and unmanned weapon systems already in use in Malaysia and neighboring countries.

ASELSAN also plays a role in several Malaysian defense projects by supplying mission systems for naval vessels, such as 4D radars and electronic warfare suites. This contribution not only enhances Malaysia’s military capabilities but also opens opportunities for local industry to become part of the global defense technology supply chain.

Building a Sustainable Ecosystem

Ahmet Akyol noted that ASELSAN is actively working to develop the local defense industry to support the sustainable implementation of these systems. Initiatives include technology transfer, technical training, and the development of local engineering capacity. These efforts aim to reduce long-term dependency on external sources while fostering a more self-reliant Malaysian defense technology ecosystem.

In addition to defense technologies, ASELSAN offers solutions for the public sector, including in areas such as security, transportation, and healthcare. These solutions are also strategic in nature as they directly impact national security and economic development. Collaboration with both public and private sectors in Malaysia in these domains is being actively enhanced.

A Long-Term Strategic Vision

Akyol stressed that ASELSAN does not view Malaysia merely as a customer, but rather as a long-term strategic partner. This relationship is driven by mutual understanding, aligned industrial development goals, and a shared commitment to strengthening regional stability and security.

The recent visit of the President of Turkiye to the region within the past two months also sent a clear signal that Turkiye-Malaysia cooperation is at a robust level—not only politically but also in terms of defense and technology.

Through a smart collaboration approach, local investment, and technology sharing, ASELSAN brings added value not only to Malaysia’s defense capabilities but also to the growth of its local industry. This positions Malaysia not just as a consumer of technology, but as a strategic partner in shaping a more self-reliant and competitive regional defense future. – airtimes.my
