In an increasingly complex world, defense technology must evolve in step with current threats. Modern air defense systems demand comprehensive, agile, and intelligent capabilities. Acknowledging this need, ASELSAN, Turkiye’s leading defense electronics company, has introduced an integrated air defense system named Steel Dome.

This system was unveiled to the public for the first time during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA). The Steel Dome concept embraces an integrated “system of systems” approach, combining multiple core defense elements into a single networked system. According to ASELSAN’s President & CEO, Ahmet Akyol, the system is the result of years of investment in radar technology, electronic warfare, command and control systems, and air defense systems.

Interconnected and AI-Driven Defense

Steel Dome is designed to operate as a seamlessly interconnected entity. Components such as radars, electronic warfare systems, launchers, and control centers function through a 5G-based communication network. Furthermore, the entire system is governed by software powered by artificial intelligence (AI), enabling rapid analysis and automatic response to any aerial threats.

Ahmet Akyol explained that this technology allows real-time detection, threat assessment, and military response. It provides crucial tactical advantages for countries facing multidimensional threats, particularly aerial and electronic attacks.

Previously, defense components like radar or control systems functioned independently. With Steel Dome, these elements now work in a structured, mutually supportive ecosystem—resulting in faster, more accurate, and integrated responses.

Strategic Launch at LIMA and Malaysian Partnership

LIMA served as a vital platform for ASELSAN to introduce Steel Dome to regional and international defense industry players. Malaysia was chosen as the first launch site due to the strong strategic partnership between the two countries. In addition, Malaysia is viewed as an active collaborator in the development of modern defense technologies.

In the same interview, Ahmet Akyol emphasized that ASELSAN’s presence in Malaysia is not a short-term venture. The company’s permanent branch in Kuala Lumpur functions as a support hub for end users in Malaysia and the surrounding region. More importantly, it facilitates local production and technology transfer initiatives.

A key focus for ASELSAN in Malaysia is building industrial cooperation through strategic agreements with local companies. This includes joint design, development of communication and radar systems, and integration of unmanned weapon systems already in use in Malaysia and neighboring countries.

Symbol of Turkish Technological Capability

The introduction of Steel Dome symbolizes Turkiye’s capability to produce defense systems that are not only technologically advanced but also adaptable to the strategic needs of user nations. It underscores that ASELSAN does more than just sell products—it brings added value through technical support and local capacity building.

In summary, Steel Dome represents a new direction in air defense. It is more than a physical shield; it is a smart system capable of sensing, analyzing, and acting in real time. With its launch in Langkawi, ASELSAN strengthens its position as a global leader in defense technology—and Malaysia stands among the first countries to witness its full potential. – airtimes.my
